One of the top safety hazards for children in the home is being seriously injured from furniture or a TV falling over on them. We have all heard horror stories of kids getting trapped under a dresser after trying to climb up on top of it. This happens daily and it can happen to anyone. If your TV or furniture are not secured to the wall they can easily be knocked over on to an unsuspecting child. There are many safety guidelines to help prevent a tip-over situation but the best way to prevent this from happening is by purchasing and installing furniture anchors.
Your furniture may have come with ties to secure the furniture to the wall but it is recommended to have anchors or tethers to keep it securely tied to the wall. Use at least two restraints per piece of furniture. Be sure to check the restraints regularly to make sure they are holding the item in place.
Secure your TV -it’s not just dressers and hutches that need tied to the wall – your TV should also be properly anchored on TV stands or mounted directly to the wall. Avoid placing toys and other items the kids would want to reach on top of appliances such as your microwave, TV, kitchen stove, etc.
According to the CPSC, 1 child dies every 2 weeks from an appliance or piece of furniture falling on them, with TVs being the highest. The percentages are highest in the 1-5-year-old range.
Don’t let this happen in your home! Protect your children from tip-over dangers and secure your furniture to the wall!
