Golfing for Good Causes at the ERIE Charity Challenge

How do you measure success?

How about 284 golfers, 8,712 holes played, 285 ERIE volunteers, 48 charities and more than $92,000 for charity?

Those are some of the numbers behind ERIE’s Charity Challenge Golf Tournament, which celebrated its fifth anniversary on Sept. 8. This year, more than 100 golfers participated in the ERIE-sponsored tournament at the Kahkwa Club in Erie, Pa.

Twenty-seven area businesses sponsored foursomes to compete for a share of more than $92,000 for the local charities of their choice. That amount was the largest in the event’s history–and more than double the initial year’s payout in 2010.

“What’s really helped grow this event is that every golfer gets to play for a charity they feel strongly about–and every charity wins something,” said ERIE President and CEO Terry Cavanaugh. “Each year, we see a few new organizations join the mix. This year, we had several who care for needs of infants and children. That’s a strong motivator to hit the ball well. ”

The day closed with an awards dinner for golfers and representatives from each nonprofit. The dinner included a video montage of the day’s highlights combined with photos from the charities.
